B2B SEO statistics from 2025 and 2026 point to one shift. Buyers pick their vendors before they talk to anyone, and most of that picking happens in search results, AI answers and review sites. A B2B buyer now uses an average of seven information sources during a purchase (Gartner, May 2026), and the page that answers their question in those sources is often the page that wins the deal.

Every figure below links to the organisation that ran the study, such as Gartner, Forrester, 6sense, G2, TrustRadius or High Alpha, and not to a roundup that repeated it. Search-wide numbers sit on the SEO statistics pillar. AI assistants get a page of their own at AI search statistics.

Key Takeaways

  • Buyers first contact a seller 61% of the way through their buying journey (6sense, Nov 2025).
  • Buyers purchase from a vendor on their Day One shortlist 95% of the time (6sense, Nov 2025).
  • 94% of business buyers used AI during their buying process (Forrester, Jan 2026).

How much of the B2B buying journey happens before sales gets involved?

Most of it. By the time a buyer books a demo, the shortlist is written and ranked. The research behind it ran through search, AI answers and review sites, out of your sales team's sight.

B2B SEO statistics: 6sense global averages for buying cycle length, point of first contact and vendors evaluated, 2025 vs prior years

Do B2B buyers want to talk to sales at all?

Not early. Most buyers want to research and buy on their own, and they bring sellers in to confirm what they already found.

  • 70% of B2B buyers prefer a completely digital, self-service buying experience (Gartner, May 2026).
  • 69% prefer to validate AI-generated insights with a sales rep (Gartner, May 2026).
  • In the previous survey wave, 61% of B2B buyers preferred a rep-free experience (Gartner, Jun 2025).
  • 73% of B2B buyers actively avoid suppliers who send irrelevant outreach (Gartner, Jun 2025).

When contact does happen, the buyer usually starts it, in roughly four of five engagements, and goes to the vendor they already favour.

  • Buyers initiate 79% of engagements with sellers (6sense, Nov 2025).
  • 94% of buyers rank their shortlist by preference before they engage sellers (6sense, Nov 2025).
  • Buyers contact their preferred vendor first and buy from it in nearly 80% of cases (6sense, Nov 2025).
  • 58% of buyers engaged vendors earlier than they otherwise would have, to ask how AI was implemented in the product (6sense, Nov 2025).
  • 62% of buyers needed sellers to answer AI-related questions that vendor websites rarely made clear (6sense, Nov 2025).

How well do buyers know a vendor before the first call?

Well enough that the call is a check, not an introduction. Most buyers already know the product they end up buying.

  • 79% of buyers had already heard of the product they bought before they started researching (TrustRadius, Jul 2026).
  • 67% of buyers ended up buying their first-choice product (TrustRadius, Jul 2026).
  • 48% of SaaS CMOs arrive at sales calls "very familiar" with the vendor, up from 22% in 2025 (Wynter, Feb 2026).
  • Buyers evaluate an average of 5.1 vendors and have prior experience with 3.8 of them (6sense, Nov 2025).
  • 69% of B2B buyers report inconsistencies between a supplier's website and what its sellers tell them (Gartner, Jun 2025).

Shortlists are short, so being on the list early matters more than winning the bake-off.

  • The average software shortlist holds 2.7 products, and 83% of buyers shortlist three or fewer (TrustRadius, Jul 2026).
  • 80% of buyers who took AI chatbot recommendations bought from their initial shortlist in at least three of their last five purchases, against 65% of other buyers (G2, Jul 2026).

Why do B2B deals take so long?

Every extra stakeholder is another person running their own searches. Buying groups are large, finance has joined them, and the cycle length you should plan for depends heavily on deal size.

How many people are in a B2B buying group?

It depends on the deal. Forrester's cross-industry sample counts more than twenty people involved. TrustRadius, looking only at software purchases, counts fewer than five.

  • The typical buying decision involves 13 internal stakeholders and nine external influencers (Forrester, Jan 2026).
  • 94% of buyers in groups of six or more report clear benefits from the larger group (Forrester, Jan 2026).
  • Procurement professionals are decision-makers in 53% of business buying cycles (Forrester, Jan 2026).
  • Software buyers report an average buying group of 4.8 people, and 79% say theirs had five or fewer (TrustRadius, Apr 2025).
  • 66% of software buyers said a VP or C-level executive was involved in the decision (TrustRadius, Apr 2025).
  • Finance involvement in software decisions rose from 31% to 46% in one year (G2, Jul 2026).

How long does a B2B sales cycle take?

Anywhere from four months to a year. The two big surveys describe different deals: 6sense's sample is made of large enterprise purchases, while TrustRadius asks software buyers across all deal sizes.

  • The average B2B buying cycle fell from 11.3 months to 10.1 months (6sense, Nov 2025).
  • Software buyers report an average deal cycle of 3.8 months, with 86% of deals closing in six months or less (TrustRadius, Apr 2025).
  • Enterprise software deals take an average of 6.6 months (TrustRadius, Apr 2025).
  • 49% of buyers said economic uncertainty shortened their buying cycles (6sense, Nov 2025).
  • 40% of software buyers say evaluation is now the longest stage of their journey, up from 36% (G2, Jul 2026).

What slows a deal down after the shortlist?

Security reviews, finance and trials. The late stages are where approved deals now die.

  • IT security review is the biggest source of delay after vendor selection, cited by 39% of buyers and 50% of enterprise buyers (G2, Jul 2026).
  • 49% of software buyers say their CFO reversed a deal the buying team had already approved in the last 12 months (G2, Jul 2026).
  • More than 60% of business buyers use a trial, rising to 78% for purchases of $10 million or more (Forrester, Jan 2026).
  • Just over a third of buyers said they planned to convert a trial to a fully paid version with the same provider (Forrester, Jan 2026).

Where do B2B buyers research vendors: Google, AI assistants or review sites?

All three. AI assistants became a standard research step in about a year, which is fast for a buying habit. Buyers still check what the assistant tells them against reviews, peers and the vendor's own site.

Line chart of B2B SaaS CMOs using AI assistants for vendor discovery: 0% in 2024, 24% in 2025, 84% in 2026

How many B2B buyers use AI to research a purchase?

From under half to nearly all of them. The spread comes from how each survey defines "use".

  • 45% of B2B buyers used generative AI during a recent purchase, mainly to gather information on vendors and products (Gartner, May 2026).
  • 63% of B2B technology buyers used AI in their buying process (TrustRadius, Jul 2026).
  • The share of buyers naming generative AI or conversational search as a more meaningful source than any other doubled in a year (Forrester, Jan 2026).
  • 61% of business buyers use private AI tools provided by their organisation (Forrester, Jan 2026).
  • More than 80% of software buyers sourced software recommendations from an AI chatbot in the last two years (G2, Jul 2026).

Do buyers start in ChatGPT or on Google?

Senior buyers increasingly start in AI tools and peer communities, then move to search and vendor sites.

  • 68% of SaaS CMOs start vendor searches with AI tools before traditional search engines (Wynter, Feb 2026).
  • 65% of SaaS CMOs start vendor searches in peer communities (Wynter, Feb 2026).
  • Only 2% of SaaS CMOs ranked cold outreach as their first discovery channel (Wynter, Feb 2026).
  • 29% of B2B decision-makers start research in tools like ChatGPT more often than on Google (G2, May 2025).
  • 52% of software buyers use vendor websites as a source, and 13% say it is the first resource they consult (TrustRadius, Apr 2025).

Do buyers trust what AI tells them?

They use it and check it, mostly against reviews and peers. Trust in online information is falling even as AI makes research easier.

  • 94% of buyers fact-check AI-generated information, and 72% do it always or very often, up from 58% (TrustRadius, Jul 2026).
  • 47% of buyers trust online resources less than they did a year earlier. In the previous survey, 39% said the same (TrustRadius, Jul 2026).
  • AI made research easier for 54% of buyers, against 40% in 2025 (TrustRadius, Jul 2026).
  • 51% of buyers say they are more likely to get misleading information from generative AI, and 49% from a sales rep (Gartner, May 2026).
  • 61% of software buyers use or plan to use AI agents in the buying process (G2, Jul 2026).

Reviews and peers now carry more weight with B2B buyers than analysts or vendor collateral.

  • 74% of buyers consulted customer reviews during their purchase (TrustRadius, Jul 2026).
  • Review site usage rose from 58% in 2025 to 63% in 2026 (TrustRadius, Jul 2026).
  • 53% of buyers spoke to a peer during their buying process (TrustRadius, Jul 2026).
  • 54% of buyers speak with a user before buying a SaaS tool, but only 23% speak with a vendor-supplied reference (TrustRadius, Apr 2025).
  • Only 14% of software buyers consult analyst reports, a 60% drop since 2022 (TrustRadius, Apr 2025).

How much pipeline and ROI does organic search bring B2B companies?

More than any other channel marketers name, and the lead widens as companies grow. Acquisition keeps getting more expensive, paid search included, while a page that ranks keeps sending visits without a per-click bill.

Which channels do B2B and SaaS marketers say work best?

Search and content, especially once a company is past the founder-led stage.

  • Updating SEO for search changes is a top trend for 40.6% of marketers in 2026 (HubSpot, Apr 2026).
  • Measuring marketing ROI is the top challenge for marketers, cited by 33% (HubSpot, Apr 2026).
  • 33% of SaaS companies under $1M ARR rate SEO and organic search as effective, about half the rate of companies above $50M ARR (High Alpha, Nov 2025).
  • Content marketing gets an "effective" rating from 52% of SaaS companies in the $20M to $50M ARR band (High Alpha, Nov 2025).
  • Paid media and digital advertising trail far behind at the top end: 36% of SaaS companies above $50M ARR rate them effective (High Alpha, Nov 2025).

Paid search, the main alternative, costs more every year for fewer clicks.

  • B2B non-branded Google Ads cost per click rose about 29% to an average of $5.34 (Dreamdata, Sep 2025).
  • Click-through rate on B2B non-branded Google Ads fell about 26% to 4.04% (Dreamdata, Sep 2025).
  • The share of B2B ad budgets going to non-branded Google search fell from 38.10% to 32.83% between August 2024 and July 2025 (Dreamdata, Sep 2025).
  • Google Search took 33.2% of B2B SaaS ad budgets in the first half of 2025 (HockeyStack, May 2026).
  • Cost per MQL across B2B SaaS companies improved from $297.48 to $274.96 between Q1 and Q2 2025 (HockeyStack, May 2026).

How are B2B marketing and SEO budgets changing?

Marketing budgets are flat, so every new line item is funded by cutting another. SEO spend is mostly holding steady, because most programmes are still producing results.

At large companies, marketing takes a smaller share of revenue than it used to, with a growing slice earmarked for AI.

  • Today's average marketing budget is 18% lower as a share of revenue than four years ago (Gartner, Jun 2026).
  • CMOs allocate an average of 15.3% of marketing budgets to AI initiatives (Gartner, May 2026).
  • 56% of CMOs say their marketing organisation lacks the budget to deliver its 2026 strategy (Gartner, May 2026).
  • Paid media now takes 31.4% of marketing budgets, funded by cuts to agencies (Gartner, Jun 2026).

What does it cost a SaaS company to win a customer?

Payback takes five months for the smallest companies and close to two years in the middle of the pack. Venture-backed companies spend close to half of revenue on sales and marketing.

  • Median CAC payback is 20 months for SaaS companies with $20M to $50M ARR (High Alpha, Nov 2025).

  • Median CAC payback is 5 months below $1M ARR and 17 months above $50M ARR (High Alpha, Nov 2025).

  • The most efficient SaaS teams recover CAC in 13 months or less across all ARR bands (High Alpha, Nov 2025).

  • Median CAC payback period has increased 12.5% since 2022 (Benchmarkit, Jun 2025).

  • The new CAC ratio rose 14% in 2024 (Benchmarkit, Jun 2025).

  • Bottom-quartile SaaS companies spend a median $2.82 to acquire $1.00 of new customer ARR (Benchmarkit, Jun 2025).

  • Sales and marketing costs 47% of revenue at VC-backed SaaS companies and 33% at PE-backed ones (Benchmarkit, Jun 2025).

  • Median growth for private SaaS companies was 26% (Benchmarkit, Jun 2025).

How is AI search changing B2B search traffic?

AI Overviews take clicks from the top of the funnel and leave most commercial searches alone. For B2B, informational content carries the risk, and the opportunity is to be the page the answer cites.

BrightEdge pie chart showing Google AI Overviews present on 48% of tracked queries and absent on 52%
Figure 5: AI Overviews now appear on nearly half of the queries BrightEdge tracks, up from about 30% a year earlier, but most searches still show none. Source: BrightEdge, AI Overviews at the One-Year Mark, Feb 2026. Chart published by the source, captured 30 Sep 2026.

Often on questions, rarely on buying searches, and the pages they cite often sit outside Google's first page.

  • AI Overviews appeared for 17.1% of the top-10 queries of 300 B2B SaaS sites, and those sites appeared inside the overview for 1.4% (Stratabeat, Mar 2025).
  • AI Overviews show on 36% of informational queries, 8% of commercial queries and 5% of transactional queries (Seer Interactive, Apr 2026).
  • B2B tech is one of the industries with the strongest AI Overview presence, alongside healthcare, education and insurance (BrightEdge, May 2025).
  • Only about 17% of sources cited in AI Overviews also rank in the organic top 10 (BrightEdge, Feb 2026).
  • In B2B tech, the overlap between AI Overview citations and top-10 results sits in the low 20s percent (BrightEdge, Feb 2026).
  • Comparison queries in AI Overviews fell 14% in the year after launch, while longer, complex queries grew 49% (BrightEdge, May 2025).

ChatGPT cites mostly business websites, and often pages that do not rank on page one of Google. Pages cited by ChatGPT search rank in organic positions 21 or lower for related queries almost 90% of the time (Semrush, Jun 2025). By type, 50% of links in ChatGPT 4o responses point to business and service websites (Semrush, Jun 2025). A page does not need a page-one ranking to be the source ChatGPT hands a buyer.

Do AI Overviews reduce clicks to B2B sites?

Yes, where they appear. Being cited recovers part of the loss.

  • Organic click-through rate on queries with an AI Overview fell to 1.3% in December 2025, then recovered to 2.4% in February 2026 (Seer Interactive, Apr 2026).
  • Organic click-through rate on queries without an AI Overview rose from 2.8% to 3.8% between January 2025 and February 2026 (Seer Interactive, Apr 2026).
  • Brands cited in an AI Overview get 120% more organic clicks per impression than brands that are not cited (Seer Interactive, Apr 2026).
  • Impressions rose over 49% in the year after AI Overviews launched, while click-throughs fell nearly 30% (BrightEdge, May 2025).
  • 72% of software buyers encountered Google's AI Overviews during research, and 90% clicked through to at least one cited source (TrustRadius, Apr 2025).
  • 77% of SEO professionals worry AI answers will reduce website clicks (Search Engine Journal, Sep 2025).
  • Gartner predicted traditional search engine volume would drop 25% by 2026 as users move to AI chatbots (Gartner, Feb 2024).

How much are enterprises putting into answer engine optimisation?

About an eighth of the digital budget, and rising. The traffic they are paying for is small in volume and strong in intent.

  • Enterprises allocated an average of 12% of their digital budgets to AEO in 2025 (Conductor, Jan 2026).

  • Nearly all plan to spend more: 94% of CMOs and digital leaders will increase AEO investment in 2026 (Conductor, Jan 2026).

  • 97% of CMOs and digital leaders reported that AEO had a positive impact on the marketing funnel in 2025 (Conductor, Jan 2026).

  • 56% made a significant or high investment in AEO in 2025 (Conductor, Jan 2026).

  • Just over half, 51%, run AEO on a fully integrated platform (Conductor, Jan 2026).

  • Visitors from AI search viewed 50% more pages than visitors from traditional search (Ahrefs, Jun 2025).

  • 80% of Ahrefs' AI search visitors landed on its homepage, free tools and product pages (Ahrefs, Jun 2025).

  • The average visitor from an AI search platform is worth 4.4 times the average traditional organic search visitor (Semrush, Jun 2025).

  • Semrush projects AI search visitors will surpass traditional search visitors in 2028 (Semrush, Jun 2025).

What should B2B companies publish to win buyers?

Pages that answer the comparison straight, and assets competitors cannot copy in an afternoon: tools, original data and industry pages. A vendor without a clear comparison, alternatives or pricing page leaves that job to review sites and AI answers.

Stratabeat chart of organic traffic growth for B2B SaaS sites by blogging frequency: 20.1% at 9+ posts a month, 16.2% at 5 to 8, 5.6% at 1 to 4

What should a comparison page tell B2B buyers?

Price, total cost and proof. B2B buyers shortlist two or three products and want pricing and ROI they can defend to finance. Those are the gaps buyers complain about and the tasks they now hand to AI.

  • 49% of software buyers say the one thing they would change is the lack of transparent pricing information (TrustRadius, Apr 2025).
  • 33% of buyers wish it were easier to calculate return on investment (TrustRadius, Apr 2025).
  • Comparing total cost of ownership and building vendor shortlists are the top uses of AI agents in software buying, at 51% each (G2, Jul 2026).
  • On transactional queries where the brand was cited in the AI Overview, organic click-through rate more than doubled from 0.7% to 1.7% during 2025 (Seer Interactive, Apr 2026).

Which content assets grow organic traffic for SaaS companies?

Publish more, and publish what others cannot copy. B2B SaaS sites that published more often grew faster and earned more links, and free tools and original research show the widest gaps. The study is correlational, but the gaps are large and consistent.

  • B2B SaaS sites publishing 5 to 8 blog posts a month grew organic traffic 16.2% (Stratabeat, Mar 2025).
  • The top 10% of B2B SaaS performers blog 11 times a month on average (Stratabeat, Mar 2025).
  • Sites publishing 9+ posts a month grew referring domains by 89.9% on average (Stratabeat, Mar 2025).

What holds SEO teams back at scale?

Algorithm changes, slow content workflows and thin leadership support.

  • Algorithm changes are the top SEO challenge at 59%, followed by content workflow problems at 32% (Search Engine Journal, Sep 2025).
  • 28% of SEO teams are held back by technical problems and 26% by a lack of leadership support (Search Engine Journal, Sep 2025).
  • About 42% of companies are training SEO staff on AI (Search Engine Journal, Sep 2025).
  • Original content creation had the most positive SEO impact, named by 66% of professionals (Search Engine Journal, Sep 2025).

Methodology and Sources

Every statistic on this page was traced to the organisation that ran the survey or analysed the data, and each link was opened and checked on 30 September 2026 to confirm the number, the wording and the publication date. Figures reported second-hand in other roundups were excluded. Vendor research (6sense, G2, TrustRadius, HubSpot, Ahrefs, Semrush, Seer Interactive, BrightEdge, Conductor, Dreamdata, HockeyStack, Stratabeat) is labelled by publisher, and sample definitions differ, so similar metrics can disagree: 6sense's buying cycles average ten months on six-figure purchases, while TrustRadius's software buyers close in about four. This page is refreshed monthly.
