What will replace SEO?

Nothing will replace SEO outright, but two extensions of it are taking over the conversation: answer engine optimization, called AEO, and generative engine optimization, called GEO.

Both mean the same practical thing. You optimize pages so ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Google's AI Overviews quote you when they assemble an answer. That is what people mean by the new SEO.

The fundamentals did not change. Engines still reward pages that answer a specific search plainly and come from a trusted site. What changed is where the answer appears and who gets the credit. Alternatives like paid ads or social reach exist, but they stop the moment you stop paying. SEO compounds instead.
