Is SSR still needed for SEO?

SSR is still the safe default for SEO in 2026, though it is no longer strictly required for Google alone. Googlebot renders JavaScript, but rendering is queued and can delay indexing by days.

The stronger argument now is everything that is not Google. Most AI crawlers, including the bots feeding ChatGPT and Perplexity, read raw HTML and skip JavaScript execution entirely. A client-side rendered page can be invisible to them.

Static generation or SSR removes the whole question. If the content is in the initial HTML, every crawler sees it, and pages load faster for users too. That is why most SEO-heavy sites still build static.
